As has now become customary, on the spring bank holiday, teams from the villages of Bentworth and Lasham gathered at Bentworth Cricket Club to compete in the annual inter village cricket match. With both teams expecting to field teams of around 14 players, the match would be 25 overs per side, everyone having to bowl at least one over, and everyone having the opportunity to bat.
After three successive defeats, Bentworth fielded a strong team that were determined to at last wrest the trophy form the clutches of Lasham. Having won the toss, Bentworth opted to bat first and aimed to set a big target for Lasham to chase.
Bentworth’s batsmen all contributed, but Jez Hartley top scored with 23, ably assisted by JP Dunnett, Philip Robinson, Freddie Seymour, Trevor Edwards and Cosmo, each of whom also made it into double figures. The batting side eventually closed their innings with a very competitive 142 for 7.
For the fielding side special mention must go to Dave Faulkner who took three wickets in one over, and to Lola who only missed out on a hat-trick because of the very poor field setting by the captain! Also worthy of note were the excellent bowling of Charlie, and great catches from James and Joff, the latter a spectacular one handed affair on the boundary that was sadly ruled out because it was the batsman’s first ball!
At the interval, while the players and spectators enjoyed a drink and the barbecue, Henry Berens, owner of the cricket ground, and his son Archie made a short speech stressing the family’s long standing love of cricket and how pleased they were to see so many local people enjoying the game on this beautiful ground. They also took the opportunity to thank and present a gift to Peter Caines and Max McAlpine for their ongoing hard work looking after the ground, as well as a very generous donation to Bentworth Cricket Club.
After refreshments Bentworth took to the field intent on defending their impressive total. Lasham made a hesitant start with two wickets falling in only the second over bowled by Trevor Wood. However Lasham soon got into their stride with top scorer Joff Goor (23), and double figures reached by Charlie, Trevor Rosati, and Stuart McCandlish.
Of Bentworth’s bowlers, Ollie impressed with a very economic two overs, with other good performances from Freddie Seymour and Cosmo. However, in a very tense finish, with Lasham needing just 5 off the last over to win, it was left to Max to bowl the final over. In an excellent performance, Max conceded only 3 runs leaving Lasham just two runs short of victory finishing on 141-4.
So Bentworth, at the fourth time of asking, have taken the title of inter village champions for 2019. Thanks to all the players for a fantastic game of cricket and congratulations to Lola and Ollie for jointly winning the player of the match award. Thanks also go to the umpires, to the team of volunteer caterers who kept all present well fed and watered, and to Bentworth Cricket Club and Henry Berens for the use of the ground.
